Subsurface Sewage Treatment Systems (SSTS)

Individual Sewage Treatment Systems (ISTS) are commonly known as "septic systems".  The purpose of an ISTS is to treat sewage from your household.  Proper treatment of wastewater reduces health risks to humans and animals and prevents surface and groundwater contamination.

The Kandiyohi County Environmental Services Department, through the Sewage Treatment Ordinance No. 27 and MN Rules Chapter 7080, 7081, 7082 and 7083, regulates the design, permitting, installation and inspection of Subsurface Sewer Treatment Systems (SSTS).
