Road/Mailbox Information

 Plow Unit

Kandiyohi County performs snow/ice control on County Roads and various Township Roads, approximately 1,100 miles. Our goal is to have all County Roads passable within a reasonable amount of time after a snowfall has stopped. Our plowing priorities reflect a commitment to insuring that key roads are kept open to serve critical facilities and to provide access between state highways and our communities.

Residents are reminded that it is unlawful under Minnesota Statute 160.2715, to obstruct any highway or deposit snow or ice thereon. Piles of snow left on or near the road can freeze into a solid mass creating a hazardous situation for vehicles and snowplows. Piles of snow increase the chance of drifting snow onto the roadway.

The Kandiyohi County Zoning Ordinance requires a setback of 75 feet or more from road right of way for bales and stacks of hay, straw, cornstalks or the like from November 1 to April 1. The purpose of the setback is to keep unnecessary snow drifts from forming and eliminate extra snow plowing costs caused by bale induced snow drifts.

Kandiyohi County Mailbox Replacement Policy

Kandiyohi County will repair and/or replace mailboxes our plows may hit and damage when plowing snow if they are mounted on an approved swing-away mailbox support. In most cases of mailbox damage, it is the weight of snow coming off a snowplow that damages a mailbox, not an actual hit by plow equipment.

Most winter mailbox damage would be eliminated if postal patrons would install a mailbox that swings away when hit by snow or snowplow equipment. Attached is a diagram of a swing-away, steel post, mailbox support we approve. If this support or attached mailbox is hit and damaged by our equipment while plowing, we will repair or replace the support and allow $15.00 for replacing a damaged mailbox. No other support or attached mailbox will be repaired or replaced.         Swing-away mailbox support diagram
